BEST PICTURE

  • The Big Short
  • Bridge of Spies
  • Brooklyn
  • Mad Max: Fury Road
  • The Martian
  • The Revenant
  •  Room
  • Spotlight

I would bump out Bridge of Spies for Carol or Inside Out or Sicario in a heartbeat. With that said, most people expected these nominations so nothing special. Bridge of Spies was great but not really that deserving of a best picture nom imo.

SHOULD WIN – The Revenant or Spotlight or The Big Short

WILL WIN – The Revenant

DARK HORSE – Room

BEST DIRECTOR

  • Lenny Abrahamson, Room
  • Alejandro G. Iñárritu, The Revenant
  • Tom McCarthy, Spotlight
  • Adam McKay, The Big Short
  • George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road

I think Ridley Scott should have gotten the nomination for “The Martian.” I don’t think its a snub like most people are saying since one of the things that made “Room” so phenomenal was Abrahamson’s directing;likewise could be said for Scott but I think overall Abrahamson had more of a challenge to tackle. I think Iñárritu deserves the statue.

SHOULD WIN – Alejandro G. Iñárritu, The Revenant or Tom McCarthy, Spotlight or George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road

WILL WIN – Alejandro G. Iñárritu, The Revenant

  • Bryan Cranston, Trumbo
  • Matt Damon, The Martian
  • Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
  • Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs
  • Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl

I really want Leo to win but I wouldn’t be surprised if Fassbender or Redmayne takes the statue.

SHOULD WIN – Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant

WILL WIN – Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant

BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

  • Christian Bale, The Big Short
  • Tom Hardy, The Revenant
  • Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight
  • Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies
  • Sylvester Stallone, Creed

Really happy with these nominations with the exception of Bale! I would have loved to see Idris Elba get a nom for Beast of No Nation. Anyways, the statue could go to anyone but I think the 2 to look out for are Mark Rylance and Sylvester Stallone but I really think Tom Hardy deserves it. Dark horse would be Mark Ruffalo. I think Bale gave a phenomenal performance in “The Big Short” but I don’t think he has a chance at winning at all. It’s a race between 4.

SHOULD WIN – Tom Hardy, The Revenant

WILL WIN – Tom Hardy, The Revenant

DARK HORSE – Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight

BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

  • Cate Blanchett, Carol
  • Brie Larson, Room
  • Jennifer Lawrence, Joy
  • Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years
  • Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn

Not really surprised with this list. I think everyone expected these nominations and rightfully so since everyone on the list gave a stellar performance. I personally think Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Jane Fonda (Youth) should have gotten nominated instead of Jennifer Lawrence.

SHOULD WIN – Brie Larson, Room or Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years or Cate Blanchett, Carol

WILL WIN – Brie Larson, Room

DARK HORSE – Jennifer Lawrence, Joy

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

  • Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight
  • Rooney Mara, Carol
  • Rachel McAdams, Spotlight
  • Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl
  • Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs

I expected Alicia Vikander to get nominated for “Ex Machina” instead of “The Danish Girl” but she was still great.  Whoever gets the statue, I won’t complain since I love every performance in this category. I would put my money on Alicia or  Kate.

SHOULD WIN – Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl or Rooney Mara, Carol or Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs

WILL WIN – Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

  • Ed Lachman, Carol
  • John Seale, Mad Max: Fury Road
  • Roger Deakins, Sicario
  • Robert Richardson, The Hateful Eight
  • Emmanuel Lubezki, The Revenant

Not much to say except, Emmanuel Lubezki (Chivo) will win 3 years in a row and he deserves it. What he did in “The Revenant” is fucking incredible. My mind can’t wrap around how Chivo got some of the shots in the film. “The Revenant” is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. Every single shot looked like a painting. I also wouldn’t mind if Roger Deakins or Ed Lachman wins.
